Day 12: Always Loving

by on April 12, 2020

Always Loving

I remember my wedding like it was yesterday. I stood up before God, in front of family and friends, and I made a commitment to always love my wife: for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, ‘til death do us part. While I’ve done my best to love my wife well, I have failed her countless times in my marriage. I wish my wife could look to me as the example of perfect love, but we both know that’s the farthest thing from reality—just ask her!

But what does perfect love look like?

For a true model of infinite love, look no further than Jesus Christ. Jesus took on full humanity, lived a perfect life, died as a sacrifice for sin, and rose again because love compelled Him! The apostle John writes, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Our eternal life comes because of Jesus’ eternal love, demonstrated most clearly through His actions on the cross.  John reminds us that “Greater love has no one than this: that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Paul echoes that truth by reminding us that “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

As sinners, it is impossible to be always loving the way God is. But we can forever look to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus as proof that He is always loving in everything He does, and this truth should propel us to pursue that same love toward others in our lives. After all, “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19).
